When Godfried first purchased his cattle ranch 25 years ago, he never intended to open a hotel. But as tourism grew in La Fortuna, he embarked on personally designing the 17 Guanacaste-style cottages overlooking Lake Arenal. Each cottage is decorated with hand-painted rainforest scenes and furnished with Italian furniture, flat-screen satellite TVs, king-sized beds and leather couches; plus fridges, safes and coffee makers with an assortment of premium teas and coffee.
For families he built extra rooms furnished with single and double beds. For couples, he added split-levels so the views from the couches are as good as the views from the beds. The honeymoon and junior suite cottages even feature spacious indoor Jaccuzzis (in addition to the showers). The deluxe cottage is the most commonly rented at $165 includes the split-level and an extra bedroom.
Restaurant
The restaurant is a remodeled cattle barn while inside, the bar is made from an old ship – figurehead and anchor included. The tables are arranged to one side of the bar with views of Lake Arenal. The breakfast includes Costa Rican typical dishes like Gallo Pinto or European delights like French toast, German breads, a selection of jams and cream cheese, coffee and juice. For dinner, the restaurant serves a variety of mouthwatering dishes with sauces that change nightly like the local, thick grilled tenderloin beside a bed of angel hair pasta and steamed vegetables – though mine was slightly on the rare side.
