Rooms
Carlos Lodge's 11 wooden cabins have high ceilings and immense back windows that frame Arenal volcano in the background. Every room has cable TV, WiFi, a table with chairs, a dresser and a spacious bathroom with hot water. Simple, clean and comfortable doubles run for $66 including breakfast.
Waterfall
Ask Greivin or one of his daughters to take you on a personal tour – included in the cabin rate – along a small trail through pastures and forest into the Arenal river valley. The falls, some 30 feet tall, are part of a stream that runs through the family's property leading to the Arenal river.
Service
Carlos Lodge has an authenticity that can't be matched by large hotels and resorts. Spending a few days with the family is like a short vacation at a Costa Rican homestay. They don't speak much English, but their hospitality overcomes the language barrier.
Our Take
- Locally grown produce
- One of two hotels in Arenal with its own waterfall
- The rooms are nothing to gawk at, but simple, spacious and reasonably priced
