Backyard Hotel
Backyard's a beachfront hotel and surfer haute so close to the Hermosa Beach the surf practically laps against the patio at high tide. Backyard's waterfall-fed pool looks out onto the ocean beside a row of palm-tree-shaded deckchairs. The bar and restaurant beside the hotel is a popular night spot and features a surf completion every Saturday that draws in locals and visitors alike.

Surfers from around the world visit Hermosa Beach to ride the consistent barrage of powerful waves that spill and froth over the espresso-colored sand. Though the waves are too big for swimmers, Hermosa is considered among the best places to surf in all of Costa Rica.
Rooms
The rooms at Backyard are close enough for the sound of the waves to lull you to sleep at night (but then again the sounds from the bar may keep you up depending on the room you have) in the six standard rooms and two master suites facing the pool or the ocean. Standard rooms, $100, come simply furnished with two twin-size bunk beds and one king-size bed, a desk, mirror, dresser, terracotta-tile floors and white walls. Every room has Wi-Fi, cable, a safety deposit box and mini-fridge.
Restaurant
More of a bar than a restaurant, Backyard is a local hangout with a dance floor, patio and two bars. Backyard has ladies' night on Wednesdays and surf competitions every Saturday and just about everything you could want from a beachside bar: heaping plates of melty nachos, mahi-mahi fish tacos, cheeseburgers and french fries. The sunset happy hour (4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.) has ice-cold beer for $1 and margaritas and piña coladas for $5.
Services & amenities
Reception posts the daily weather reports for surfers that include the size of the waves and the times for tides. The hotel also has a pool, deck chairs and outside showers for washing off after getting in the ocean.
