Miss Junie belongs to one of Tortuguero's founding families while her food has fueled generations of locals and visitors. Today, Miss Junie's daughters continue her legacy of hospitality offering Caribbean-style cuisine, lodging and tours to the thousands of visitors who come each year to watch nesting sea turtles and visit Tortuguero National Park.
Rooms
Surrounded by coconut palms, silky sand and lush vegetation, the two-story hotel is a Caribbean architectural-vintage reminiscent of the 1940s when sawmills first brought lumber to the village. Its exterior is finished with an almond-stained wood, wrapped in patios and furnished with chairs for enjoying the cool evenings. The rooms, $65, per night with breakfast in the dry season (Sep.- Nov.), come with full-sized beds draped in vibrant Caribbean pinks, yellows and greens. Amenities include fans, Wi-Fi and private bathrooms with hot water.
Restaurant
Miss Junie's family still uses the coconuts from the palm trees that her grandfather first planted when he settled in Tortuguero in 1910. Today, the family processes the coconuts for its milk, oil and meat used in Miss Junie's recipes like the Caribbean-stewed chicken $14; slow-cooked chicken thigh with grilled onions, sweet red peppers and coconut infused rice and beans or the mixed seafood dish, $17; Caribbean spiced-squid, octopus, fish and baby shrimp served with patacones (fried green plantains), vegetables and salad.
Services & amenities
Miss Junie's offers its own ecofriendly tours using canoes rather than motorboats that include visits to Tortuguero National Park and the surrounding canals. The hotel also has its own turtle-hatching and nighttime turtle nesting tours (in conjunction with the national park) during green sea turtle season from July 1 to September 30.
