read more closeDepart from either Puerto Viejo or Cahuita en route to the Jungle Adventure operation center in the hills 30 minutes outside Puerto Viejo. Here, you'll have the opportunity to change into your bathing suit, apply sunscreen and lock up any extra belongings you might have before donning your harness and helmet for the first zip line.
The adventure starts from the moment you slide 830 feet across the first cable into the valley below. Hike through the secondary forest with your guides while searching for coatis, howler monkeys, raccoons, poison dart frogs and snakes. Learn about the rainforest while guides reveal some of the more interesting flora seen along the path like ginger root, walking palms and cecropia trees. Inside the secondary forest, you'll walk across a monkey bridge over a gorge and rappel 130 feet into Carbon Canyon.
Well-worn by a stream that runs through its center, Carbon Canyon is named for its natural carbon deposits found in glossy black chunks along the river. From the base of the rappel, hike down river hopping along stones, or in the middle of the stream to reach the Carbon Canyon waterfall – a vertical face about 15-feet high, perfect for learning to rappel while feeling the rush of cold water roll over your legs. After your descent, you'll climb back up and walk to a trail that will lead you into the primary forest with tall trees, thick trunks and dense canopy.
You'll emerge from the forest beside the canopy tour's fourth zip-line; a 500-foot ride from tree to tree. Continue through the canopy riding 11-zip lines at heights of up to 250 feet above the forest floor. Land at the thirteenth platform for a surprise Tarzan swing that will take you from a tree top platform to the side of a mountain. Saving the best for last, the tour's apex is reached with a 1,000-foot superman zip line where you'll strap in and fly over the treetops like a superhero.
The final line will complete the loop taking you back to the operation center for a lunch of sandwiches before packing up and heading back into town.
