read more closeAdriana Guolo and husband Matteo bought their dream home in 2014 in Marbella, Costa Rica named for their two and a half year old daughter Alice (pronounced Al-ee-che in Italian) and converted their America-built two-tier home's first floor into a lodge.
The two-tiered lodge building features high hardwood ceilings, wide windows and bright colored walls and ceramic floors. The house has three rooms on the first floor and a large open plan with a kitchen leading into a communal living lounge at one side and a large dinning table with doors to a veranda with chairs and sleepy hammocks.
Casa Alice Surf Lodge is 10-minute walk to Marbella hamlet and a 14-minute from the barrel waves of Playa Cocos. Its peaceful gardens are full of roaming wildlife monkeys, squirrels, exotic birds roams through their garden from the coast to the mountains especially between May and November.
Rooms
Towering trees surround the Casa Alice Surf Lodge where three rooms are on the first floor while the owners live on the second floor apartment. One small room $25 per person per night (Sep.-Nov.), sleeps two – the maid's quarter – is behind the laundry room has a fan, and two twin beds with views to the back gardens. One medium size room $40 per person per night (Sep.-Nov.) with two queen-sized beds that can accommodate four people with private bathroom, A/C and fans. One large room $25 per person per night (Sep.-Nov.), with two bunk beds, and two twin beds, air condition and fans.
Food
Refuel your energy for that day of hikes and surfing with Casa Alice Surf Lodge's breakfast: scrambled eggs, a toast, fresh tomatoes tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper, a fruit of the day plate topped with Chia seeds and a fresh fruit smoothie.
Travel to Italy with Adriana's home cooking some of her pasta dishes are tossed with broccoli sauce – of course it is al dente!
Services and Amenities
As a Casa Alice Surf Lodge guest, you can buy groceries and food on your way to the lodge or hike to Marbella and get what you need and bring the food to store and prepare using the lodge's community kitchen.
You can sign up for surf lessons with Matteo ($40 per person per hour). He was a former Italian sport wear outfit owner and an avid Mediterranean surfer in the coastal town of San Remo Liguria in north-western Italy. He has been tackling the waves of Playa Cocos for more than two years.
The lodge also rents surfboards for those surfers who did not want to hassle of putting their own boards on the plane.
Matteo and Adriana are approachable, courteous and extremely helpful whether looking for things to do around the lodge or just a friendly conversation. Alice is the sparkle of the house!
