Luxury Home Tax
The luxury home tax is collected by the Finance Ministry and is separate from property taxes that all Costa Rica homeowners must pay. The tax is based on a sliding scale and applies to homes valued at $218,000 and higher. Initiated in 2008, the luxury home tax helps fund low-income housing projects developed by the National Housing Mortgage Bank. The annual tax deadline is January and homeowners who fail to pay their taxes are subject to additional fines as interest is calculated at 13.3%.
